Artist Statement

This series of paintings was inspired by a recent trip to Tokyo, Japan, where I had the unfortunate experience of being hospitalised for a week with appendicitis. Stuck on the 10th floor of a Japanese hospital with only the city skyline as my muse, I turned to drawing as a form of meditation to pass the time. Focusing on small pockets of the infinite expanse of buildings, I pulled architectural shapes and fragments of colours from the view before me. Building on my ongoing investigation of abstraction and representation, these fragments were remixed and arranged to create the final compositions. Upon my return home, I translated these drawings into the paintings in this show, using repetitive brush strokes on the surface of the paintings to reference the passing of time. Through these works I hope to show how beauty can be found in otherwise difficult or mundane circumstances and inspire curiosity about the urban environment.
